MES and OEE
Pareto Chart   What We Do...

MES - Manufacturing Execution System - a system that you or your customer intends to deploy to measure and also control a production facility. Quality and production metrics are accurately tracked as a means to continuous improvement.

OEE - Overall Equipment Effectiveness (sometimes referred to as Operating Equipment Effectiveness) - an important aspect of MES that lets the production management team know how well a piece of equipment or a whole manufacturing system is running (when compared to an ideal system).

Lean Manufacturing - Utilises MES and OEE to reduce the seven most significant production system wastes - scrap (defects), over-production, motion, inventory, transportation, delays and processing.

Are you thinking of installing a MES or OEE application in your manufacturing facility? Do you have a client with MES or OEE projects? MES and OEE systems can be a great challenge and require a considerable amount of forethought before the project is executed. We will help you with your design cycle and component selection including the re-engineering of your manufacturing process. We will help you minimise the capital outlay for your system or your customer's system.

MES involves the measurement of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for your manufacturing process. If you are not measuring it, how can you improve it? From a MES System we can draw a figure called Overall Equipment Efficiency or OEE (sometimes referred to as Overall Plant Efficiency or OPE). With a MES system you will know, for example, the top five alarms in your plant so that your valuable maintenance resources can be appropriately directed. It will tell you which shifts give you the most number of rejected products. OEE takes equipment availability (operating time/available time) times performance ratio (100% rate times actual over time) times quality factor (good/bad) for a single reference number or target for the process or entire facility.

We will help you get your plant or customer ready for products such as SIMATIC IT or their own custom-written and bespoke OEE/MES applications.

  ISA S95

Our MES and OEE advice is centred on ISA S95 principles. ISA S95 is the "Enterprise Control System Integration Standard". S95 is set of definitions and models to define how data is categorised within a production system as it is linked to administrative groups such as sales, finance and quality control.

The standard relies on a system wide hierarchy laid out using the following levels:

  • Level 0 - "The Process" - field instrumentation, field buses etc.
  • Level 1 - "Basic Process Control" - Programmable Logic Controllers and Programmable Automation Controllers; HMIs, Workstation CNC - safety-critical systems and basic control systems;
  • Level 2 - "Area Supervisory Level" - Area supervisory control, workcell CNC;
  • Level 3 - "Manufacturing Operations and Control" - Management, high-end supervisory control, shop floor co-ordination;
  • Level 4 - "Business Planning Logistics" - Site production scheduling, site accounting:
    • Level 4A - Site operational and production supervision, plant production scheduling and operational management;
    • Level 4B - Management data presentation, plant management information.
  • Level 5 - "Enterprise" - Enterprise financial systems (beyond S95).

hls innovations limited will work with you to make sure that your Level 0, Level 1 and Level 2 systems match your chosen MES/OEE solution. We will provide you with the expertise you need to bring your mixed plant floor systems up to grade for integration into a plant-wide system.
